Ingredients:
- 2 slices of rye bread (or your choice of bread)
- 2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)
- 1 pound ground beef (or your preferred meat, such as turkey or veggie)
- 4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese, if preferred)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for caramelizing onions)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Secret Sauce:
- 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon pickle relish
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions:
- Make the secret sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pickle relish, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well and set aside.
- Caramelize the onions: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, season with a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until golden and caramelized. Set aside.
- Form the patties: Divide the ground beef into 2 equal portions and shape into patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Grill the patties: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side or until fully cooked to your desired doneness.
- Assemble the patty melt: Butter one side of each slice of bread. Spread the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of both slices. Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each piece of bread. On one slice, layer the cooked patty, followed by the caramelized onions, then top with the other slice of bread, sauce side down.
- Grill the sandwich: Place the assembled sandwich in the pan and grill on medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
- Serve: Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve hot!
Notes:
- For an extra kick, add a few slices of pickles to the sandwich before grilling.
- Feel free to use your favorite cheese – cheddar or pepper jack would be great alternatives to Swiss.
- If you want extra crispy bread, you can toast the bread slices separately before assembling the sandwich.
