Ingredients:
For the Cowboy Burger Patties:
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Toppings:
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or smoked gouda for a twist)
- 1/2 cup crispy fried onions (store-bought or homemade)
- 4 tablespoons BBQ sauce (extra for drizzling)
- 4 hamburger buns (brioche or toasted for extra flavor)
- Lettuce, for topping
- Sliced pickles, for topping
- Tomato slices, for topping

Instructions:
- Make the burger patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, BBQ sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Gently mix the ingredients until combined, but don’t overwork the meat. Shape the mixture into 4 even patties, slightly larger than your buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.
- Cook the patties: Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (about 160°F for medium). During the last minute of cooking, add a slice of cheddar cheese to each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
- Toast the buns: While the burgers are cooking, spread a little butter on the inside of each burger bun. Toast them on the grill or in a skillet until golden brown and crispy, about 1-2 minutes.
- Assemble the Cowboy Burgers: Spread a tablespoon of BBQ sauce on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place a cheesy burger patty on top. Then, add the crispy fried onions, lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles on top of the patty.
- Serve: Drizzle a little extra BBQ sauce on the top of the burger, place the top bun on, and serve immediately with a side of fries, coleslaw, or chips.
Tips:
- Add some heat: For a spicy kick, top with sliced jalapeños or drizzle some sriracha on the sauce.
- Try a bacon addition: Add crispy bacon strips for even more smoky flavor and crunch.
- Homemade fried onions: If you’re up for it, make your own crispy fried onions by slicing onions thinly, soaking them in buttermilk, and coating them in flour and seasonings before frying.
- Grill marks: For extra flavor, grill the burger patties over direct heat to get those signature grill marks.
