This classic German Chocolate Cake is a show-stopping dessert featuring layers of rich chocolate cake and a gooey coconut-pecan frosting. Perfect for birthdays, holidays, or whenever you crave a truly indulgent treat!
Ingredients
Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
Coconut-Pecan Frosting:
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large egg yolks
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups shredded sweetened coconut
- 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions
- Make the Cake Layers:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry ingredients. Beat until combined. Stir in hot water until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely.
- Make the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:
- In a medium saucepan, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 8–10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Let cool completely before spreading.
- Assemble the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of frosting on top. Repeat with the second and third layers, frosting the top and sides as desired.
- Garnish with additional coconut or pecans, if desired.
Note
- For extra chocolatey flavor, brush the cake layers with a simple syrup made from cocoa powder, sugar, and water before assembling.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Bring to room temperature before serving.
- For a shortcut, use a boxed chocolate cake mix and prepare the frosting from scratch.
