Ingredients:
For the Patty Melt:
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of rye bread (or your preferred bread)
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or cheddar for a different flavor)
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)
For the Secret Sauce:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon pickle relish (optional for added tang)
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Secret Sauce
- Mix the sauce: In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, pickle relish (if using), and salt and pepper. Stir until smooth and well combined. Set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Onions
- Sauté the onions: In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. If the onions start to burn, lower the heat and stir more often. Remove from heat and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Burger Patties
- Form the patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into 4 even portions and shape them into patties, about the size of your bread slices.
- Cook the patties: In a large skillet or grill pan, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. If you like your burgers well done, you can cover the pan to cook them through more evenly.
Step 4: Assemble the Patty Melt
- Assemble the sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on the unbuttered side of two slices of bread. Place one slice of cheese on the bread with sauce, then layer with a cooked burger patty, a few spoonfuls of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the other slice of bread, buttered side out.
- Grill the patty melt: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled patty melt sandwiches on the skillet. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Step 5: Serve
- Serve immediately: Once grilled to perfection, remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice them in half, and serve hot with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.
Tips:
- For extra flavor: Add some sautéed mushrooms or a fried egg to the patty melt for an extra indulgent twist.
- Cheese options: While Swiss is traditional, you can also use cheddar, American, or even pepper jack cheese for a spicier kick.
- Make it a double: For a bigger patty melt, add an extra patty to each sandwich for a double burger effect.
- Caramelize onions ahead of time: You can prepare the caramelized onions in advance to save time.
