Old Fashioned Apple Crisp 🍏🍂

Ingredients:

For the apple filling:

  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6-8 medium apples; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

For the topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions:

Prepare the apple filling:

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish or a similar-sized pan.
  2. Prepare the apples: In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice to prevent browning.
  3. Add sugar and spices: Add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour to the apples. Stir until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Make the crisp topping:

  1. Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Cut in the butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add nuts (optional): Stir in the chopped pecans, if using, for added crunch and flavor.

Assemble and bake:

  1. Top the apples: Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  2. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crispy. If the topping starts to get too brown, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
  3. Cool: Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Serve:

  1. Serve: Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the perfect comforting dessert!

Tips:

  • Choosing apples: For the best texture and flavor, use a mix of tart apples like Granny Smith and sweet apples like Honeycrisp. This balance of flavors makes for a perfect filling.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven before serving.
  • Make ahead: You can prepare the apple filling and topping separately, store them in the fridge, and assemble the crisp just before baking.
