They’re perfect for birthdays, themed parties, or just as a creative dessert to share with loved ones!
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 1 box vanilla cake mix (or homemade vanilla cake if preferred)
- Ingredients for cake mix (usually eggs, oil, and water—refer to box instructions)
For the Blue Buttercream Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk (or more for desired consistency)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Blue gel food coloring (for the Cookie Monster blue color)
- Pinch of salt
For the Cookie Monster Decoration:
- Oreos (or chocolate chip cookies, crushed into large chunks)
- Candy eyes (available at craft stores or online, or you can use edible googly eyes)

Instructions:
1. Make the Cake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pan as directed on the box (grease or line with parchment paper).
- Prepare the cake mix according to the box instructions.
- Bake the cake in a 9×13-inch pan (or use mini cake pans for smaller individual portions) for the time specified on the box. Once baked, let the cake cool completely.
2. Make the Blue Buttercream Frosting:
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until it’s light and fluffy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Add the milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on high speed until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
- Add blue gel food coloring a little at a time until you reach the desired “Cookie Monster blue” color. Mix well.
3. Assemble the Cake Jars:
- Once the cake has cooled, cut it into small squares or crumble it into chunks, depending on how you want to layer it in the jars.
- Layer the cake in the bottom of each jar, pressing it down slightly to make room for the frosting.
- Pipe or spread a layer of blue buttercream frosting on top of the cake layer. You can use a piping bag with a large round tip to make it easier to create fluffy swirls.
- Add a few crushed Oreos (or cookie chunks) on top of the frosting, pressing them gently into the frosting to add some texture.
4. Create the Cookie Monster’s Face:
- Pipe or spoon a little more frosting on top to form Cookie Monster’s “fur.” You can pipe the frosting around the top of the jar to make it look like fluffy blue fur.
- Place two candy eyes on top of the frosting to create the Cookie Monster’s face.
- Top with more crushed cookies or half a cookie around the eyes to create a “mouth” for Cookie Monster.
5. Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve immediately or refrigerate the jars until ready to serve. These make for a fun and portable dessert that’s perfect for kids and adults alike!
Tips:
- Cake Flavor: You can use any cake flavor you like, but classic vanilla works best for this playful dessert. You can also add chocolate chips to the cake batter for a more decadent treat.
- Customization: Add extra candy pieces, such as M&Ms or mini chocolate chips, to the frosting for a little more sweetness and texture.
- Jar Size: Use any size mason jars or clear glass jars for individual servings. For mini portions, smaller jars work great, while larger jars are perfect for a more substantial serving.
- Make Ahead: You can bake the cake and make the frosting in advance. Assemble the jars the day you plan to serve them for the best freshness.
