There’s something truly comforting about the classic McDonald’s Sausage, Egg, & Cheese McMuffin — that perfectly toasted English muffin, savory sausage patty, fluffy egg, and melty cheese all stacked together for a quick and delicious breakfast.
But why wait in line when you can make this iconic sandwich right in your own kitchen? This copycat recipe captures the taste and texture of the original with fresh ingredients and a few simple steps. Plus, you can customize it however you like!
Ingredients (Makes 4 sandwiches)
- 4 English muffins, split and toasted
- 4 large eggs
- 4 sausage patties (store-bought or homemade*)
- 4 slices American cheese (or your favorite cheese)
- Butter, for spreading
- Salt and pepper, to taste
*To make homemade sausage patties:
- 1 pound ground pork
- 1 teaspoon sage
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Sausage Patties (if making homemade)
In a bowl, combine ground pork with sage, thyme, salt, pepper, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Mix gently and form into 4 patties about the size of the English muffins. Cook patties in a skillet over medium heat for 4–5 minutes per side or until fully cooked. Set aside.
2. Toast the English Muffins
Split the English muffins and toast them until golden brown. Butter the cut sides lightly.
3. Cook the Eggs
Using an egg ring or small round cutter, crack each egg into the ring in a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat. Cover and cook for 3–4 minutes until the whites are set but yolks are still soft (or cook longer if you prefer firm yolks). Season with salt and pepper.
4. Assemble the Sandwiches
Place a sausage patty on the bottom half of each English muffin, add a cooked egg on top, then a slice of cheese. Top with the muffin lid.
5. Serve
Serve immediately while warm. Great with a side of fresh fruit or hash browns!
